Nido '76 - Email Archives

26.XII.01 (Boxing Day)

Queridos Todos:

The Nido76 web site is updated now and includes a number of reunion snapshots I received over the past several weeks from Luis, Ivan, Francoise, Pablo and Mike. Please have a look -- especially those who could not attend.

From what I understand, we will be receiving the CD (filled with literally hundreds of images) and T-Shirt soon.

I hope you are enjoying Boxing Day -- the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race plus a full day of Cricket.

This is a special request to all those of you that participated in the
Nido'76 reunion in Santiago . . .

Monday, December 17th is Roberto Larrondo's birthday . . . please send him
an email wishing him a Happy Birthday on MONDAY!

Roberto's email is larrondo@ctcinternet.cl

Roberto was crucial to making this reunion happen in Santiago, and I know he
will be very surprised and appreciative, if we all wished him a happy day on
Monday.

I know I missed some people, so please pass this on . . . so as many of the
people as possible will participate.

Thanks for the playing along . . . and for a wonderful reunion!!

Dear Francoise:

It is great to see pictures already appearing on various web sites.

Regarding the viability of using Homestead -- it might be a good way to allow various individuals to upload images. It does, however, suffer from the pop-up ads which can be annoying, as well as slowness. The industry is in a volatile state so it is not clear how long Homestead and similar businesses will continue to exist (we hope they will exist for awhile anyway).

What we could do is establish a permanent location (say the http://www.quino.net/nido76 site -- or suitable name) that can be relied on for correct links to sites such as the eagle76.homestead and misc sites as well as chatrooms, etc. Jenny has a lot of really nice archive pictures and it would be great if they could be made available via the Homestead site. Others could build similar sites.

I need to work this out with Gonzalo -- could give him access to my site to make sure the information is up to date. I have enough space for a number of 'starter' pictures.

We are looking for a new home / website for the class'76 . . . what are the
possiblities that this could be it . . . what would you need from the
community and how would we work all this out??

Does anyone else have any ideas regarding how to create an easy to use site
for the class'76 & '77 ???

I am working on compiling a CD of photos from the recent reunion . . . and I
will gladly share these photos for the website . . . and I would also like
to see a way, for the alumni to add photos of each other as we re-connect
with friends over time . . .

Thanks for your interest in this project.

Lorando, Jon Kendall, Isabel Rose and everyone else who made this Nido
reunion a complete and total success. You all worked your butts off to pull
this thing off. It was great to see ALL of you. I made new friends and
rekindled old friendships. After a day or so, it seemed like we were right
back to the days of Nido.
celebracion.

Gracias a todos.

All: As you may know, we are preparing a CD photo album of the reunion. If you have any photos that you can send me electronically and would like to share with the group . . . please send them to me soon. (We will be using these on the website as well.)

With the holidays approaching fast, I know we will all, be getting busy . . . but please don't forget to send your photos. We hope to have the CD finished in 2-3 weeks and we will be mailing it to your U.S. alumni, and the Chileans will be able to pick their's up from Roberto Larrondo.

Thanks again to everyone who participate in the reunion, for sharing your time with old friends . . . and let's not wait so long to do the next Nido reunion.

Hello to everyone,

If anyone sees my brother and sister, Mike and Michele McGeoy, tell them
that Miles Allan McGeoy was born on Thursday Nov. 29th, at 1:40. Happy and
healthy, and eating like a demon. We'll be home from the hospital on
Sunday. (Shannon had a C-section.)

I wish so much that I could have been with you all at the reunion. The time
in Chile still remains the most formative time of my life, Nido de Aguilas
the most special of places, and the friends that we all made loom really
large in my heart. Have the best time in the world and take a bunch of
pictures to put on the web.

The dinner at Chabuca's house en el arrayan se paso. It will be a night we will always remember. So many people -- not seen in 25 years hablando como si fuera 1976.
As you know a CD is being compiled with photos -- hoy y ayer. The presentacion hecho por Roberto y otros se pasol. Y el quiz hecho por Mike -- fracasaron casi todos.

Bueno, hoy dia tenemos el asado en Nido. I have to get ready.

Greetings Friends!

The Nido reunion is now just 8 days away and we have finally nailed down as many of the details as possible, (you can't believe how hard it is to coordinate a reunion, especially one that is 12,000 miles away!) Along with Roberto Larrondo and Francoise Escutia I must have sent 5000 emails in the last 12 months trying to make this event happen.

Attached is a document that lists the events, some contact information, and the list of attendees. Please read this carefully and print it out for your records, (especially if you are travelling.)

For those of you who are still in Chile, (and particularly if you are classof '77), pay close attention to the list of attendees. If there are some classmates that you do not see on the list, who are still in Chile, and you would like to see at the reunion: Get in touch with them ASAP and also forward their names and contat information to me.

I'll see all of you in Santiago in just about 1 week!

Saludos
Mike McGeoy

Hey Bobby!

I've been meaning to drop you a line in regards to the upcoming reunion but
have been so busy!

The reunion originally started as a Class of '76 reunion but there was also
lots of interest from folks in your class. Plus most of us had just as many
friends in other classes as we did in our own! So we decided to open the
reunion up to Class of 1977 although most of my efforts have been in
recruiting members from my class. John Heyn got in touch with a number of
your classmates when he was donw in Chile in August although I just recently
got contact information from John.

So far the list I have of Class of 1977 alums who said they would attend,
(either as a response to one of my emails or in talking with John,) include
the following:

Isabel Atala, Bobby Carter, Jerry Coy, Bob Grasty, Sandra Goedhart, Rebecca
Hart, John Heyn, Michele McGeoy, Anne McManus, Adolfo Reginato, Gabriel
Valdivia, Mario Patino,
Pablo Luna

I suspect that there are others from your class who have heard about the
reunion but these are the only names that have been brought to my attention.

Anyway, we have planned a Friday evening reception at Isabel Rose'
housewould love to have as many Class of 1977 alums there as possible. Take
a look at my list and let me know if there are any other classmates that you
are in touch with who might want to attend on Friday night.

We are also trying to plan something for Sunday afternoon or evening but
can't seem to nail anything down yet. Again you and your classmates are
welcome and urged to participate in whatever we end up doing.

I will be sending out a Formal announcement tommorrow or the next day to let
everyone know what is happening. It would be great if you could forward it
on to those classmates that I don;t have information on.

I know that your brother Steve arrives on the 27th (?) and is going to be
staying with you while he's there. I arive on the 28th with a whole group
and we'll be staying in Las Condes at the "Time Suites" Telephone: (562)
233-6047. Can you send me your Tel. # so that I can get in touch with you
guys when I get there.

Thanks for your help and I'm looking forward to seeing you!

Mike

WHEN:Saturday, December 1
WHERE:Nido de Aguilas School (Calle Nido de Aguilas 14515, Lo Barnechea)
TIME:12:00 on

This will be an asado-field day where we'll share our memories, play some
sport games, tour the campus and meet old buddies and teachers.

The idea is to bring your own meat, salad and wine and the school will
have the barbecues ready to cook the meat. Ice-cream and drinks will be
sold at campus.

This invitation is being spread out through e-mail, so if you have
classmate's e-mails please forward this message to them.

Ther's a nice alumni group coming from the US and it'd be great if you
can come and share with all of us.

Warm regards,

Lilian Jaques

Great news that we have finally nailed down the Friday and Sunday events. And thank you so much Mary Ann and Isabel for offering to host these events in your homes!

Couple of things:

1) My guess is that casual attire is the way to go with these events, (although I had initially planned on bringing my Tuxedo!)

2) It sounds like catering would be the best way to go with both of these events, so that everyone, (especially the hosts) can enjoy themselves! I would suggest that we have the caterer do both food and drinks. If we think that cost might be an issue we can probably arrange to do the drinks ourselves (?)

3) Menu (?)
The item that was mentioned consistently by most folks who will be travelling is "Empanadas!" My suggestion is to order a variety of "local" foods and make sure to have a dish or two for "vegetarians." Drinks ? Of course Pisco Sours (which many have mentioned) and then a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. I think in reality people won't care too much what kind of food there is!

4) Cost -
What probably makes sense is to just add up all the costs and come up with a per person cost. It's probably too late at this point to ask people to send money, so when you have an idea of that cost please let me know and I will communicate it to all of the attendees so that they have an expectation ahead of time. We'll put both costs together and collect from folks on Friday night.

5) Addresses, Directions and Phone numbers -
Get these to me ASAP so that I can put everything together in an announcement, (Jon can probably also post it on the website.)

6) Transportation -
The responses that I got to my questionnaire indicate that 3 or 4 people are planning on renting cars while in Santiago, and that a number who will be staying with family will have some level of access to an auto. Perhaps we can work on putting together some sort of phone list of locals that travellers can get in touch with when they arrive? There will be a big group of us staying at the same hotel and we can maybe use that as a "headquarters."

7) Miscellaneous -
I'm working on a design that we can use for a commemorative T-Shirt or Polo shirt. Ideally we could have the shirts done in Santiago and give them out at the events. IF everyone thinks that this is a good idea, I can forward the design ( we won't have much time for "proofing") and have someone there take care of it. Roberto, perhaps you could enlist one of the guys there to handle this? If we can get an estimate on the cost then I will include it in the announcement. What does everyone think?

A) T-Shirt
B) Polo Shirt
C No Shirt

That's it from me for now. Let's stay in close touch over the next few days!

Mike

Dear All:

I vote for casual.

This is getting exciting -- will make the 28 hour flight (routed via USA) from Australia worth it (arriving 21 November -- leaving 12 December - tel: 2292684 (hermano)).

It still is not too late for those still deciding whether or not to come -- Sometimes the airlines have deals right up to the moment. So even if you have been running flatchat, there is still time. The organising committee have a fabulous line-up. Who knows, perhaps John Heyn will bring his cassette copy of 'You're a Good Man Charlie Brown' for people to listen to. My copy is buried in boxes and I cannot locate it.

travelling, it would mean carrying an additional piece of luggage (at least
for men). I propose we stay with "casual" for all activities.

There are exactly 6 weeks until the Nido reunion in Santiago. For planning purposes we need to know if you have made a decision (one way or another) to attend the reunion.

I hope that the answer is yes, but I certainly understand if you have decided not to go, (for any reason at all.)

So far:
29 of our classmates have said Yes
8 have said No
12 we have not been able to locate
5 of you said Maybe at one point
4 of you have given us no response whatsoever

Please let us know one way or another

This email is mostly targeted at those who have not yet made the decision to attend the reunion in Santiago, (and maybe those who might reconsider their previous decision not to go!)

If you have been waiting for the ideal time to book your air tickets for the Nido reunion this may be it. Most major airlines have slashed fares for many destinations. I did some checking from various US cities and here is what I found:

R/T to Santiago (and back)

From:
Los Angeles $622.00
Atlanta $589.00
New York $574.00
Miami $582.00
Philadelphia $521.00
Boston $598.00
Wash. DC $518.00
San Francisco $ 658.00

It looks like the price cuts will only last through Monday (I read that somewhere.)
There is a new airline booking service called ORBITZ that had the best prices across the board. the URL is:
www.orbitz.com (you need to register, but it's a pretty simple process and it doesn't cost anything!)

We are exactly 8 weeks away from the reunion! So if you are still "thinking about it" don't put it off any longer.

I hope to see as many of you in Santiago as possible!

Mike

Hey Team!

Just checking to see how things are going with details for the reunion. I only got 6 or 7 responses from my recent inquiry as to whether or not people were changing their travel plans in light of the events of Sept. 11th. Fortunately all of the respondents said that they were still intending to travel to Santiago for the reunion.

I have attached a spreadsheet (Excel) with as much information as I have been able to gather over the last 6 months.

Here are the statistics so far:

Class of 1976 - Total names on the list = 57

Yes I will be there = 29
No, I will not be there = 7
Maybe = 5
No Response = 16

In addition there are a number of alumni from other years who are planning on making the trip, (as well as those who still live in Chile.) And finally, there is yet another group of alumni who were planning a gathering and have agreed to join us for a picnic on Saturday at Nido. Lillian Jaques who works at Nido said that the school can provide the BBQ's Drinks and ice. She suggested that everyone just bring their own meat and salad. I don't think that is very workable and would like to try to have our group figure out the cost, do the shopping, and then charge everyone accordingly. We of ocurse would need to coordinate with Lillian on the "other" group of alumni. I think it makes more sense to do it this way.

Maryann Muller had suggested that she or Alexandra Edwards might be able to provide their home for the Friday night cocktail reception, so unless anyone else has a better idea, we should probably take her up on the offer. someone should get in touch with her as she also volunteered to help with organizing efforts.

And that leaves Sunday. I suggested a dinner at a nice restaurant, since it would be easier to organize than another "event." But I'll leave it up to you guys to figure out what makes sense. Adolfo Reginato (Class of 1977) volunteered his beach house to do an asado, so keep that in mind!

We really need to stay in close touch over the next few weeks to make things as smooth as possible.

Gotta run!

With the tragic events of last week and it's aftermath, the future seems to be very uncertain. Along with our emotion of sadness we are all probably also experiencing a great deal of fear! Fear for our safety, fear for our economic livelihood, fear for our way of life, and just fear in general. Some obviously will experience it more than others.

What a world we live in!

My guess is that for many of you the reunion is not high on your list of priorities at this particular time. My guess is that some who were having a hard time deciding may decide not to go now because last weeks events. I'm sure that there are some who had already made the decision to go and have changed their minds or are contemplating it. That is to be expected.

I for one, am still planning on making the trip to Santiago and attending the reunion, and it is my hope that many of you will make the same decision. As with all tragic events, time will eventually "heal all wounds" (or at least it is supposed to!) But each of us has to do what is right for themselves and their families. We all need time to cope, time to think, time to reflect, and time to heal.

Because we have all kinds of details to take care of for the reunion (which is about 11 weeks away) it would be helpful to do a recount of those who plan on attending the reunion. Please keep in touch and let us know what your plans are: Still going, decided against it, (for whatever reasons!), or still trying to figure it out.

May God truly bless you all!

Mike

It's just horrible. As for myself, I'm really fortunate. Only now that
I've been interviewed 3 times by TV as a "survivor" do I realize what a
close call it was.

I was at a meeting on the 31st floor of #2 world trade center, saw the
first plane crash and ran
down, fortunately went down quickly on the elevator so I was already 3 or 4
blocks away when the 2nd
plane hit-- otherwise I could have been hit by the steel and concrete was
raining down along with lifejackets and
other pieces of the plane. I saw a vision of hell -- concrete on fire,
rubble, blood and small human remains, the sky darkened by the smoke and
dust. I didn't stop running until I was in midtown ... picked up the kids
and now am OK I guess. We haven't tracked down all
of our employees yet ... we had 20+ in the building at the time and we
haven't heard from 3 of them. There was a major trade show for financial
software in the top floor of WTC#1; I knew about 30 of the 200+ people
there. They're all unaccounted for as they went to the roof when they
found that the stairs were blocked by fire. It's just horrible.

Queridos Todos:

As can be noted from the flurry of email messages being sent, the organising committee has been very busy shaping up the Nido '76 reunion. It looks very exciting and I am hoping to cross the Pacific ditch to join in on the fun.

I finally updated the Nido '76 web site:
--The intro section reflects recent updates to the tentative programme.
--The archives are current through 6 September. I removed email addresses (except for those I knew were OK) but if you would rather not have your name mentioned, please let me know and I will remove it.
--The Recuerdos section is updated with the most recent images (1976 en 1966 y otros).
--The links have been updated.
--Emile -- was not sure if you wanted images of Sebastian and mum included so I refrained.

I think I will be in Chile from 29 November to 17 December. I would like to travel to Rininahue--if anyone is interested in spending a few days down there, please let me know as we ought to work out details.
Again, I hope those undecided will decided to come--the reunion will be a lot of fun.
Ciao,
Your humble and obedient Tasmanian public servant,
Jon

Let's divide this list and track these folks down!!

Mark Bradford was from Texas . . . Sandy, can you try to find him.
(Also, his family was with the Morman church in Chile, and surely through his church they can locate his family. Can someone in Santiago, make a call to the Morman Church and see if they have an address for the Bradford family??)

I think Tamara went to college in Europe . . .Claudia Sutulov . . . any ideas on how to find her.

I think Carlos Davila has kept up with Holly Brooks . . . I spoke with her several years ago and she was in the Washington DC area. CARLOS: Would you please help us reach Holly??

Come on folks . . . help us find the rest of our classmate and invite them to the reunion. It would be a shame if we missed the opportunity to include our old friends in this project.

Let me know if you have any ideas on how to find the rest of these friends . . . I'll gladly call, write or email them.

Thanks for the great spirit . . . I can't wait to see y'all in Chile!!

Subject: Reunion Lodging - Please respond ASAP!
Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 10:22:04 -0700

If you are receiving this email it means that you have either:

(A) Already made the commitment to travel to the reunion in Santiago or
(B) You are still considering it!

If you are in the (A) group please read the following and then answer these few questions regarding lodging:
We are working with a travel agent in Santiago to help with booking of hotels. They have sent me some special rates for a number of hotels. In addition I have been doing quite a bit of research on the Internet in regards to lodging. And we have lso had a number of offers from folks in Chile to open up their homes, (we still don't have any specifics however.) Since we all will be coming from many different parts of the world, coordinating lodging could prove to be a challenge. So, if you can help us out with this little questionnaire it would enable us to do the best possible job for everyone.

1. Do you require or want any assistance with booking lodging ? If NO, then you are done!
2. Is it important to you to stay in the same hotel as some of your classmates?
2. Would you prefer to stay in a "traditional" type hotel or an "Apartment" type hotel (kitchen, laundry, etc.)
3. Do you have any preference as to where in Santiago you would like to stay? (Providencia, Las Condes, Downtown etc)
4. Would you be open to sharing a room with another classmate(s)?
5. Would you be interested in going in with a group of people in a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment type (sleeps 4 to 6)?
6. What are you approximate arrival and departure days?

If you are part of group (B) please consider the questions above as you try and make your decision whether or not to attend. In my research on hotels the range that I found goes from $60 - $200+ per night for single accomodations in a traditional hotel arrangement. Of course in the apartment type arrangements with 2-3 bedrooms, the cost per person can be in the $25-$50 range. It all really depends on what you want to do. Hey how about we just rent a big house in Farellones for the week like we did our senior year?

So, please get back to me ASAP one way or another!

Saludos!
Mike McGeoy

Hello Mike,

Un saludo cordial a ti y toda tu familia.

It seems that this reunion is definetely rolling fast. The folks from Chile are very excited about this.
The sooner I can I'll be sending you the list of classmates that are willing to provide accomodations in their homes for classmates & families.

Carmen Gloria del Olmo cdelolmo@andinadelsud.cl , the travel agent from Chile who is arranging Hotel accomodations and special group discounts for this meeting will get in touch with you very soon, all she needs is the exact number of people coming to get all set.

Looking at the schedule, I suggest the following:

Friday Nov 30:
Arrival to Santiago's International Airport, flights from USA come early morning (8:00-9:30 am). Wellcome committee at the airport will help everybody with transportation to Hotels or homes for a short rest or nap.
Afternoon: Sightseeing city tour of Santiago, departing from Nido
Evening: Wellcome cocktail or dinner reception someplace. I suggest "Estadio Espanol". A beautiful place with plenty of accomodations in Las Condes. I will send you pictures and details of this place to you as soon as possible.

Saturday Dec 1:
Picnic /BBQ at Nido with alumni-teacher Soccer game & Basketball or Volley. In the evening dinner & dancing at Nido ( maybe in the gymnasium). We can hire an orchestra ? What do you think.......

Sunday Dec 2 :
Mass or Workship service, followed by a brunch in Santo Domingo (close beach 90 min from SAntiago). Afternoon activities at the beach returning to Santiago by the evening. Those leaving that same day, transportation will be provided directly to the airport from Sto Domingo.

Un abrazo a todos !!!.........................................Roberto Larrondo

I wish you the best for your Class Reunion. I would definitely attend if I was there, but I'll get to Chile probably around de 15th (of December). Please give my regards to the rest of your class.

From: Me (:-)

First...

I am hearing from more and more alumni who are "considering" attending the reunion and the one question that they ask is in regards to lodging. I think it would be great if we could start to give folks some concrete information on what kind of options there are. I have heard from a number of folks that some classmates in Santiago have volunteered to open up their homes to boarders. I also know that Francoise is working with a travel agent in Santiago. John Kendall has a website, but without up-to-date info it starts to lose it's effectiveness. So here is what I propose:

Francoise: If you could get a list of hotels from the agent that would be suitable. Perhaps a few on the "Economy" end and then some Moderate to Expensive for those "high rollers!" Also, if the agent is able to put together some kind of "group discount" that would be great to.

Roberto: If you could get a list of those in chile who are willing to board at their homes. Time frames, how many, etc. Also, I have been in touch with Lilian Jacques (1979?) who works at Nido, and found out that some other alumni have been talking about some get togethers. I suggested that they just piggy-back with our efforts and she agreed. She might also be a resource for lodging, setting up the event at Nido, etc.

John Heyn : If you could also do the same with the contacts you have made in your recent trips.

Sandy: Keep up the networking efforts on the phone and email!

Me: I'll keep playing point person for this whole deal since I have considerably more free time on my hands right now than most of you! You can funnel all new information through me and I will filter it and get it to John Kendall to post on the website.

Second...

As the de facto committee it is pretty much our call as to what events are scheduled. So having done one of these in the past, here is what I suggest:

Friday (11/30) - Some sort of cocktail party/reception preferably at someones home, although a restaurant would certainly work fine.

Saturday (12/1) - Picnic/BBQ at Nido w/ an Alumni Soccer game (yes somoe of still play!)

Sunday (12/2) - Either a Brunch or Dinner at a nice restaurant in Santiago

I would hesitate to try and organize site-seeing tours as most people will undoubtedly have certain places they will want to visit on their own.

Let's keep in close touch here. Before you know it it will be time to board the airplanes!

Chao
Mike

PS Take a look at the email distribution list and let me know if you have contact for anybody that is not on the list.

For those of you who have not yet booked your flights to Santiago for the reunion. American Airlines is having "One-Day" Sale but you have to book your tickets by midnight tonight (Thursday 8/23/01)

I checked out fares from a variety of cities and they are pretty darn low!

Round-Trip

Miami $612.00
Dallas/Ft. Worth $712.00
San Francisco $707.00
New York $665.00
Los Angeles $835.00
Wash/Balt $796.00
Philadelphia $557.00
Atlanta $507.00
Nashville $660.00

Now how can you pass up the reunion, those are killer fares!

Stay tuned for info on Lodging/Hotels in Santiago. Francoise is working with a travel agent and there are some compadres in Santiago who have offered up their homes help keep the cost down.

Don't delay any longer, you do not want to miss this. You really don't!

Quick message to let you know I'm still alive!

Here is the list I have compiled so far. We need to hook up and keep the momentum going!

Those who have said Yes, and will be traveling:

Mike McGeoy
Michele McGeoy
Patrik Edenholm
Sandy Geisewite
Francois Escutia
Charlotte Halsema
John Heyn
Bob Molineaux
Tom Opazo
Adolfo Reginato
Luis Tejada

Those who have said "Maybe" and would be traveling:

George Fisher
Debbie Grover
Saskia Goedhart
Sandra Goedhart
Al Gonzalez
Bob Grasty
Rebecca Hart
John Kendall
Brian Mathews
Steve Niemeyer

And of course there is a whole list of those who are still in Chile and would more than likely attend. Lilian Jacques also mentinoed that there was a whole other group of alumni who were planning a reunion of sorts and would join our efforts.

Let's keep the ball rolling!

Mike

Just in case anyone was wondering ... there will be a Nido reunion!

At this point we are just over 3 months away from the date, and for those of you who have been waiting for the right time to make the "Go - No Go" decision, the time is NOW!

Although we don't have the actual events locked down yet, the weekend of 11/30 - 12/2 (Fri - Sun) is set.

At this point we are still trying to guage how many will be in attendance. So if you have not yet responded, please let us know:

1. Definitely will be attending
2. Still considering atending
3. Definitely will not attend

It looks like the airlines are starting to get into the "Air Wars" mode, so it might be a great time to book your flight. Also, John Heyn who is a pilot with American Airlines, recently took a number of trips to Santiago and met up with a number of alumni who have said they would open their homes to travelers who need a place to stay or are on a tight budget. We are trying to make this as easy as possible for as many as possible, but we need to start nailing some things down. So again, please let us know one way or another if you will be able to attend.

(Note: If you have already responded, you don't need to respond again, unless of course you have changed your mind.)

So, please get in touch with one of the following members of the committee:

Mike McGeoy ( themcgeoys@home.com)
Sandy Geisewite (sandygeisewite@hotmail.com)
Francoise Escutia (Luca) (fluca@txdirect.net)
Roberto Larrondo (larrondo@ctcreuna.cl)

I truly hope that many of you can make the trip happen, because it may not happen again!

It is absolutely great the idea of meeting this year and find out some of your roots. I sawJohn Heyn last week, see Bobby Carter often as he works at Nido and Lilian Jaques as well. Chances are that some of you don´t remeber me much. I had a "nice motorcycle accident", that had me out of circulatuion for some time...when I read your names i do recall some of you well.
If I can be of any help, please let me know.

Debbie,

Just got back from my first trip to Chile since I graduated!! I had an
awesome time; the first night Pablo Luna picked me up and took me to his
house where I was met by Mario Patino, Gabriel Valdivia and Bobby Carter. We
stayed up till after 2am talking, eating appetizers and a very light quiche
dinner all prepared by Pablo's sweet wife Sylvia. The next day Bobby picked
me up and took me up to Nido to see the grounds and a few people even you
will remember; Chabuca (Isabel Rose) who is now a Biology teacher at Nido,
Mr. Munoz (sorry, have not figured out how to get my "enye" to work), Mr.
Collado the guy's P.E. teacher, Franco the crazy spanish teacher, Lillian
Jaques who is Alex Jaques little si and now registrar of Nido, and Bobby's
wife Carmen who is and was then a Kindergarden teacher.
Everything is built up and modern including Nido but I was happy to find that
the lawn where we all use to hang out between classes is just the same as
before except the trees are bigger now.
I wanted to let you know that the group of us organizing the reunion are
finding was to drastically reduce the price to fly and stay down there so
don't give up on me yet, OK?
I will tell more when I get back from my second trip Friday back to Santiago.

Con amor,

John

PS I need to know if you are still in contact with other Nido folks so I can
let them know about the reunion!!!

Hi everyone!

Many of you who receive this were probably not aware that I actually had flights to Chile this month. This was my first time back since graduation! All though it is only a 36 hour layover it has been great so far. I just got back from a get together at Pablo Luna's house; I was lucky enough to have Mario Patino, Gabriel Valdivia and wives show up as well as Bobby Carter. We had lots of 'traguitos' and appetizers followed by quiche and desert all prepared by Pablo's lovely wife Sylvia. Yes Sandy, I got some pictures! Tomorrow, Bobby will pick me up and take me up to Nido to see the school and other alumni who now teach or work there.
The guys here are very excited about the upcoming November reunion and are willing to help out in their own way be it lodging or transportation.
Please folks, don't lose out on thisgolden opportunity to rekindle friendships from a special time. I was not expecting such a great homecoming from the few friends I have seen and they are very interested in seeing all of you and yes, I mean everyone who receives this email...they asked about all of you!!

Howdy Y'all:

Sandy and I will be helping to organize the activities for the reunion.

We will need your ideas and preferences to make this a memorable event.

This is what we have discussed so far.

Event at Nido: Cocktails, Dinner & Dance (Inviting the teachers and alumni)
We have thought about "hiring" the senior class to decorate and help
organize the event, in exchange for a donation to their class trip or
student fund. We still need a theme . . . and entertainment ideas . . .
music preferences too!

Mass or Worship Service: This would be an opportunity for us as a group to
reflect on our challenges, successes, blessings and good fortune over the
last __ years. Brunch to follow. Location to be determined

Picnic: Casual event for families and friends. Location to be determined

Excursion: Beach (Santo Domingo has been suggested by Roberto) We would
need to determine how many would be participating to secure accommodations
and transportation. Other suggestions are welcomed.

Sight-Seeing or City Tour of Santiago: A tour of Santiago is a must . . .
other sites can be included. Suggestions are welcomed.

This is about all have so far.

Please respond to Mike as soon as possible to confirm you will be attending.
And please respond to Sandy and myself with ideas for what you would like to
do in Chile after so many years!!

Thanks for your support. I am looking forward to seeing you at Nido in
December!!!

As much as I promised myself that I would leave the organizing to someone
else, I just can't help myself! I know what you are all thinking: "Gee I
don't remember Mike as the "organizing type" back in school!"

As you have already seen in my earlier mail to the entire mailing list, I
took the bold step of setting a date for the reunion. The weekend of
December 1-2, was based in part on the feedback of a handful of people, and
also fits nicely inside of the my planned travel dates of Nov. 27 and Dec.
5!

To make this work, and to give the opportunity to the largest number of
people as possible here are the high level areas that we really need to
focus on over the next few weeks:

1) Get the message out to as many people as possible
Things to think about:
The attached Excel spreadsheet contains a list of 73 alumni that I have
managed to put together using many different resources, (looking through a
yearbook, searching the internet, supplied by someone else on the list,
contacting their brother or sister, etc.) Roughly half of these people show
an email address. We need to go on a networking campaign to try and fill in
the blanks and then get the message out to these people. Generally I have
found that someone on the list has kept in touch with someone else on the
list; or knows someone else on the list who might know where someone else
is, and so on, and so on. Can I suggest that Sandy and Francoise be the
point persons on the US side to track down as many as possible. And Roberto
and Jani on the Chile side can try and track down as many folks who are
still there. If you can please forward any changes or additions to me as
quickly as possible I'd appreciate it! The wonders of the internet and
email make this process so much easier than it was in the days of telephones
and paper mail, (do we still do that?)

2) Figure out how to actually administer a "financial aid" program!
Couple of things here:
John Heyn who is a pilot with American Airlines has volunteered to donate 4
or 5 tickets which he gets "at cost" from American. He is checking to see
what "cost" is for a US to Chile RT, but based on the current lowest
airfares I can find on the Internet, my guess is that we are talking about a
couple hundred bucks each! These would certainly enable some of our
classmates to make a trip that might otherwise be out of reach. American
Airlines also offers a 10% discount for groups of 10 or more providing the
bookings are done a certain number of days in advance. There are others on
the list who work for airlines, (from what I have heard!) We should check to
see if they are able to offer anything along the lines of the John Heyn
offer. I thought I heard that Saskia works for KLM (?) and that Mario
Carvallo still works for US Air (?) Did I also not see that Arlette is a
travel agent? I also heard that there might be some alumni who own/manage
hotels in Chile. Again these could be potential ways to ease the burden.
Of course there is always the potential for folks in Santiago to open their
homes for some of the weary travellers. Patrik Edenholm also mentioned that
he owns a home north of Zapallar that could be used. The trick here is to
get creative and do as much networking as possible. And finally, I'm
willing to throw some $$ into a fund if that would help some make the trip.
Just to pick a figure and get the ball rolling I'll pledge between $100
-$200 to the cause. Anyone care to work on this piece of the program? If
no volunteers, I could probably take this piece on.

3) Think about the logistics of the actual reunion itself
The format that I used when I had the reunion in August of 1991 worked like
this:

Friday night we had a party at my house
Saturday during the day we did a big picnic at a local park where we cooked
Steaks, chicken, etc.
Saturday evening we had a cocktail party at a local restaurant/bar
Sunday morning we had a brunch at a local restaurant.

Quite a bit packed into just 48 hours but when all was said and done it
didn't feel like nearly enough. One mistake that I made was to focus alot
on the "food and drinks" piece of the event, when in reality folks were just
so happy to see each other, talk over old times, etc. I didn't bother to
schedule any "tourist" type of activities since we were gathering to see
each other mainly. My guess is that we might want to schedule something
like a school tour somewhere in the mix, since those of us who have not been
back in many years are dying to see the school. After all, that is our
common bond is it not? What would be really cool, would be to coordinate
the visit with the school administration and plan some activities over and
above a tour of the facilities. Wouldn't it be neat to speak in front of
some of the classes or an assembly and talk about our experiences at Nido!
Whoa Mike, slow down!
Jani and Roberto, (and others who might be interested) can take the lead on
planning some activities and the logistics invovled.

That is enough for now, my head is starting to spin! As we start to nail
somethings down we can have John post them to the wonderful website that he
is going to build and host!

Remember time is of the essence!

Mike

Hey Nido Alum!

You are receiving this email for one of the following reasons:

1) You have already expressed some level of interest in attending a Nido
reunion
2) Someone has given us your email address in the hopes that you might be
interested
3) We found your name on one of the various websites (Nido Alumni,
Schoolmates.com, etc.)

Here it is "short and sweet"

* There has been a movement afoot over the last year, by the Nido class of
1976, to hold a reunion.
* Based on discussions, and responses that we got, the reunion will be in
Santiago on or around the weekend of Dec. 1, 2001
* We are working to put together some sort of "financial assistance" for
those who might desire to attend but $$ is an issue.
(personal donations, discounted airfares/ lodging etc.) Currently American
Airlines offers a 10% discount off of the lowest fare for a group of 10 or
more. Also, one of our Alums, who is a pilot may be able to provide a few
airline tickets at a drastically reduced price.

Realizing that this type of endeavour may be:
(A) Fairly costly (current US RT/Airfare is in the low to mid $800's right
now)
(B) Would suggest being away from work for at least 5-7 days

We ask you to answer the questions below to help in our planning and
organization of the reunion.

1) Based on the dates (12/1 - 12/2) are you interested in, and able to,
attend the reunion in Santiago?
_____ Yes, I would plan to attend, with spouse/family
_____ Yes, I would plan to attend, but by myself
_____ Maybe, (schedules and finances are tight), but I would "seriously"
consider attending
_____ No, I don't believe I could swing it, (for whatever reason)

2) If Yes, where would you be flying in from and what would your approximate
Departure and Return dates be?

3) If Maybe (finances are tight), and some level of assistance were
available, would you be able to attend?
_____ Yes, (money is all that would hold me back)
_____ No, (money isn't the issue, it's more about work schedules,
commitments, family, etc.)

4) If No (for whatever reason), then would you like for us to keep in touch
with you, send pictures, etc?
_____ Yes, by all means keep in touch
_____ No, (for whatever reason)

5) If Yes to #1 - Are you able to help in one of the following ways:
_____ Donation of $$ to help with others travel
_____ Through my work I would be able to provide, free or discounted
airline tickets, lodging, etc.
_____ I can volunteer my home, vacation home, etc.in Chile to help keep
lodging costs down.
_____ I know of another alumni, friend, family, etc. who could help us out
with one or more of the above.

That's it!
Keep tuned for more info and instructions. Alsowe will be "migrating" to a
website that John Kendall will set up and manage, that will be helpful in
the communicaiton process.

I really hope to see many of you in Santiago, because I will be there!

Regarding Rininahue, I was there with my family the year after you left

had just been remodeled again and was being very professionally run. I
think it would be a great place to go, even if it is as an after-reunion

Hey John:

Great to here from you! And I think we should take you up on the website
offer. While those free sites do have certain advantages you have to deal
with all of the advertising and email that gets generated by belonging to a
"free" site! Not to mention that you are at their mercy.

I'll get some basic info for you to get started and then we can just build
as we go!
Sandy and Francoise are kind of leading the effort although I'm finding
myself doing more and more organizing as each day goes by. And I even
promised myself that I would let someone else do the organizing this time,
Oh well!

This is quite an undertaking, but thanks to technology I think it is quite
"doable."

Also, I assume from your email that you are planning on attending!

OK, back to work Mike!

I'll be back in touch soon

Thank-you Mike,
I appreciate your efforts for the reunion and
I agree with you in 100%.
At first, I was sort of dissapointed because I didn't see much enthusiasm
in our classmates (the questionaire, pictures etc) but as you say a
committe of people has to take care of the organization. People in US,
Chile and other countries has to make a list of the classmates that are
planning to travel and participate.

I really don't have much time, this period for me is very busy for
me,... but, count on me for the organization of our fellows in Chile and of
course for the website photos too.
And of course include me in case of financial support.

Francoise Luca has being doing an excellent work trying to join all the
group so I think you have to work together with her to make this dream to
come a reality.

Best Regards.. and good
luck.................Roberto Larrondo

Mike: Thanks for taking the initiative on moving this forward; late Nov

don't know if others are having similar problems - so I suggest we do not
rely on it. Greetings to all. Cheers, Patrik

Mike

FYI - I went to Chile for my 20th class reunion in 1999 (Class of 1979)
and had a great time. We timed it to coincide with the Kermesse in
November. I would recommend you do the same. It was great to See Mr. Munoz
and Mrs. Sahr. It's an easy way to see the school again and get together
for a fun event. I saw about half of my classmates, and have some of their
contact information below. Some of them might help you with contacts in
Chile. I was passively involved in organizing my reunion. It wasn't so
bad. Of course - I was the only one from the States that showed up. I like
your ideas better.

Maria Jose de la Masa -
Mauricio Escobar -
Roberto Guzman -
Lilian Jaques -
Tomas Jocelyn-Holt -
Frances Kohen -

Mike - here are some more contacts from your era:

Bruce Gillette

Henry Davila

I did't see Tomas Opazo on the list. I think his email is

GOOD LUCK! Give my regards to Dave and Michelle.

Best regards - Emile

P.S. - My brother Bob was quoted in the business section (page C-5) of the
New York Times on Friday May 11th! He is starting a new Advertising Agency
with the two named partners - Venables/Bell. He is still in San Francisco,
CA, and his home phone is. He doesn't have his new email
yet.

The wheels seem to be slowly turning and it appears like a reunion in
Santiago in late November/early December may be a reality!

I have hesitated up until now to take on too much of a role on the
organizing effort, as the reunion I put on in 1991 nearly killed me (not
really but it was lots of work!) So while stopping short of volunteering to
become the leader of this endeavour, I am willing to get more involved
because I feel so strongly about this reunion and want to see it happen if
at all possible.

So...

We lost a certain degree of momentum when eCircles went out of business. At
that point we had roughly 25 different people on the list. Gonzalo has
gotten another site up on MSN Communities, but so far we have only 6 or 7
names.
Given the relatively short period of time we have, we should probably not
rely on the website but resort to direct emails and telephone calls.

We have traded lots of emails about where and when and now is the time to
lock things down so people can start planning. The two proposed dates were
Nov/Dec. or early January. So far there have been a handful who have
indicated the Nov./Dec. dates would work better than January. In the
"Corporate America" world, just after the New Year tends to be a busy time
as everyone is trying to make up for the last 5 weeks of holidays,
vacations, parties, etc. Personally I could make it work, but the Nov./Dec.
time makes so much more sense.

The research I have done on the Internet also shows this time to be more
favorable in terms of airline fares, (at least from the West Coast to
Santiago.) Most airlines that fly to Santiago are currently advertising
rates in the low $800, as opposed to $1100 -$1200 in January.

There had been talk of putting together some sort of "Assistance fund" for
those that might be eager to attend but tight financially. While it is a
great idea, that kind of "needs based" program might be hard to pull off
without lots of administration. However, I am certainly willing to
participate on the "donor" side if it will help some folks attend, who
otherwise might not. In addition I just spoke with John Heyn (Class of '77)
who is a pilot with American Airlines and he has volunteered the fact that
he receives a number of tickets each year which we could leverage off of (4
or 5). They are not free, but would be substantially discounted over normal
rates. He will be checking into actual cost and getting back with me.
Thanks John!

This brings up a question which I had posed a number of months ago, but
never got response. However at this point I'll turn the question into a
statement! Given the nature of our time at Nido and the size of the school,
and the fact that we all probably had just as many friends in other classes
than we did in our own, we should open this up to all who desire to attend.
We all shared a unique experience and education that was not necessarily
specific to one class. When I organized a reunion in 1991 we had
representation from probably 4 or 5 different classes although the largest
group was from class of '76. I know that there has already been much
interest expressed by non-'76ers and I say " the more the merrier!"

So in order to pull this off we should put together a committee of 3people
who are willing to commit to a fair number of hours per week to work on
this. Based on the kinds of things that need to happen here is what we need
in order of importance:

1) Nail down a date for the actual reunion activities (i.e. picnic, dinners,
etc. - Friday night cocktail hour, Saturday picnic, Sunday brunch, etc. )
2) Quickly build a list with as many people as possible and get the
information to them so that they can make a decision and book their travel.
3) If we truly are going to try and help with some financial assistance,
someone needs to be the point person for that effort. (Financial aid could
consist of:
A) Those who desire to, throwing some $$ into a pot,
B) Assistance with airline tickets, discounts, etc. through your job (along
the lines of John Heyn's offer, etc.)

4) Work on the travel/lodging logistics (can we find special rates on
airfare, can we get a good rate by booking a block of hotel rooms at the
same hotel, are their classmates in Chile who might be able to accomodate
people for the week, etc.)
5) And finally figure out what we are going to do when we get there!

So having said that: I am planning on flying to Santiago somewhere aoround
November 27, 28, 29, and statying approximately 7 or 8 days.

I will volunteer to be the point person for #2 but ask that you all try to
help as much as possible with the networking and searching that must go on
to build the list. I would ask that anytime you come up with a lead on
someone new, that you first try to make contact with that person, and
simultaneously send me their contact information so that I can add it to the
database I have put together. I will periodically mail out updates as the
list grows.

Someone needs to volunteer to be the point person for #3 and #4 and someone
also needs to be the chairperson for the overall effort, (I had previously
nominated Francoise and Sandy, and will stand by that!)

If we are going to pull this off, we need to really make a concerted effort!
Please do whatever you can to assist.

More in the next few days!

Why upload pictures to the Nido site

It just make it easier for others to contact you.

It could be pictures of yourself, maybe your hometown, or the University you went to, your boyfriend, husband, children....whatever you want. I know others would want to know more about you, and an easy way of doing it is through pictures of your interests.

If you don't know how to do it (you don't have a scanner or digital pictures), its fine. Mail them to me and I'll scan them and put them for all to see (and send you back the pics). They don't have to be perfect either...we are not !

Cheers,

Gonzalo

When the other Web site went down we lost many e-mail addresses. Please send us whatever e-mail you have of other classmates, so that we may send them an invitation.
